The Apokoronas region is beautifully scenic and unspoiled. Against the backdrop of The White mountains (Lefka Ori) are sandy beaches and traditional villages waiting to be explored. Our Villa is in the beautiful village of Plaka and is only a few minutes walk from tavernas, cafes and shops. The elevated position of Plaka allows for breath taking views across souda bay.

 

Plaka is a friendly Greek village with a 3 tavernas, 2 bars and 2 mini markets, enough to cater for all your holiday needs without being overly commercialised or touristy.

 

We have spent many years holidaying in Crete as a couple and over the last few years as parents of young children and have always found a fantastic reception from the local people. Their relaxed and friendly manner makes holidaying in Crete a pleasure for old and young alike. Whether you are a couple, a family large or small you will be made to feel very welcome and at home in this region of Crete.

The cosmopolitan town of Chania, voted the most beautiful on Crete, is accessible by bus from Almirida or is a 30 minute drive in by car or taxi. This is a vibrant lively town steeped in Byzantine, Venetian and Turkish history. The harbour is a good place to sit at one of the many bars watching the world go by. The maze of narrow streets behind the harbour houses many restaurants and shops.
The large bay that makes up the seaside resorts of Almirida, Kalives and Kalami has many separate sandy beaches, usually with full facilities. All of these beaches are safe for children because they shelve very gently into the sea. There are plenty of good quality, reasonably priced tavernas at or near the beaches. There is a windsurfing school in Almirida and mountain bikes can be hired.

Almirida is the nearest seaside resort to our villa; tavernas and bars line the sea front. There are a couple of mini-markets, a bakery, a wine shop, a newsagent's, an internet café and the car, bike and boat hire rental offices.
The closest mini market, tavernas and bar are located in Plaka village 500 metres from our villa. The mini market is very well stocked and sells fresh bread daily (except Sunday), dairy products, fruit and veg as well as a selection of packet and tinned goods. Both tavernas serve excellent food at very reasonable prices. The 2 bars are where the locals mix happily with the tourists and whilst there may not be too much going on during the daytime, at night the area is buzzing with life.
 
The nearest banking and post office facilities are in Kalives, about 10 minutes drive away. Some of of guests have walked there but I'm not that energetic. Kalives is a working village as well as being a tourist destination so you will find many local shops as well as a fairly big Inka supermarket.
